Riding your bike out on the road is VERY different from riding it inside using the bike trainer. Yeah, go figure!
I had a 6 mile bike ride on the schedule for today and since we had plans this morning and it's going to be WAY hot this afternoon, I decided to get up early & log the miles outside around our neighborhood. One full loop (including the little cul-de-sacs is equal to 1.59 miles, according to MapMyRun). The temp was perfect, warm but still cool enough that I got a nice breeze as I rode. There were a couple of others out this morning, either running or biking.
It's definitely harder to ride outside. Even the slightest change in elevation is felt while pedaling. I'm going to have to try to do more of my workouts on the road, versus my living room floor. It's good practice for trying to figure out the 18 gears on my bike, too. I WILL have to look into finding toe clips for my pedals, it would be nice to take full advantage of the up pedal and to not have my feet quite so free on the downhills.
Workout summary:
6 mile bike ride = 40 minutes*
* Did ya notice that it took me much longer when riding outside? I typically have been able to do 8 miles on the stationary bike at the Y. But of course, no change in terrain or speed, really. Another good reason to train outdoors. Who wants to go on a bike ride with me?
